______

Good design should be circular design.
A simple statement and fact this is what HOST stands by.
Words by Tianna Williams | 3 October 2024

As a new season begins, Autumn known for harvest and often seen as nature’s true start to the year, we at HOST were delighted to be invited to take part in Islington’s Repair Shop as part of St Mary’s Festival 2024. Held in the beautifully solemn settings of the St Mary Church and linked to Circular Economy Week, the event was a wonderful and indeed, a very useful showcase of key local businesses and individuals all offering a plethora of solutions aimed at accelerating our transition to a low carbon circular city.

We were also honoured by Wallpaper* Magazine who published an article highlighting HOST and our dedicated work over the past six years in building an unparalleled collection of over 40 pioneering multidisciplinary designers and makers practicing circular-design principles. We are immensely proud of and grateful for their trust and commitment to us.

This recognition brought with it an overwhelming sense of reflection—a brief but poignant moment that took us back to the beginning. A central idea, a desire, and a refreshing naivety, combined with unwavering belief, carried us through our own cyclical journey from ideation to reality, overcoming countless challenges along the way. In doing so, we believe we believe we have created something truly special - a playground for bright, curious minds eager to reimagine the possibilities of waste and rethink contemporary craft, offering an alternative to consumption that fosters a deeper connection to the rhythm of our Planet.

This moment of reflection has also made us acutely aware of how far we’ve come—from a barely conceived concept to becoming a leading voice in circularity, also now recognised by Wallpaper, a global authority in design championing the best in architecture, interiors, art, and contemporary lifestyle is humbling. A brief moment this might be but is one worthwhile. A ‘well done’ to everyone involved—and now, back to work, knowing that the task to fully integrating circular design into mainstream production remains immense. We are gaining momentum in prompting powerful consumer behaviour change to reduce our impact on the planet. To borrow the words of Rumi, "If everything around seems dark, look again—you might be the light."

Since 2018, The Home of Sustainable Things has pioneered circular design, encouraging mindful living and serving as a catalyst for the curation and development of circular design. Over the past six years, nurtured relationships in our incubation studio have transformed brilliant ideas into a constellation of innovative, tangible designs, now exclusively available at HOST. We have created commercial pathways and proof of concept to show that design can be both beautiful and sustainable. Seeing our tireless work to reimagine waste into design objects celebrated in print is a huge achievement and proof of concept we had hoped for at the start of our journey. However, there is no greater validation than the support you have shown over the last six years by purchasing these objects and living with them in your homes, helping us all tread more lightly on our planet.

You can read the Wallpaper feature, HERE. We hope you enjoy it and join us in amplifying our shared ethos and values, helping us foster new relationships and partnerships to continue our important work. Thank you, Wallpaper magazine, for this wonderful acknowledgment, and an ongoing thank you to all of you who have supported us along this marvellous journey of a lifetime.

As we near the end of our letter to you today, we wanted to remind you to make changes large or small during your daily routines this Recycle Week 2024, taking place from October 14 -20. Join us in taking time to think about the end of life cycle of what you consume during this time.

Another date for your calendar is the Frieze art fair (6-21 oct) will showcasing the work of Australian indigenous artist Naminapu Maymuru-White whos work draws focus on the consideration around earth, materiality and our relationship with our place of origin. Using painting techniques to communicate stories of creation and the interconnectedness of the earth and cosmos, her work is a profound reflection on our shared existence.
