The vase is a recent edition to the "How Do You Like Your Eggs" Vase range by Basse Stittgen. Each vase is made from the whites and shells of at least 100 b-stock and/or broken eggs. It is the latest example of the extraordinary materiality of an ordinary item such as waste food, used to design a fully degradable, tableware accessories made of food, otherwise destined to be wasted.
As much as his design focuses on the workability of the raw material, Stittgen aims to address the shift in value of the food produced and generate awareness of the scale of waste. He points at our consumption habits and the enormous, avoidable upset to nature as one third of all egg production is lost or wasted through short shelf life or transportation, amassing to the loss of over 300 million eggs per year!
Each item is handmade and it might have natural irregularities, which makes them unique. We hope you see this as an advantage rather than a vice!
