ReCinder The World’s Lowest Carbon Tableware
_________
It is rather curious that the narrative around ‘decarbonising the plate’ has rarely concerned the plate itself. Instead, it has focused almost entirely on what is served upon it – rethinking and reducing the carbon footprint of food production.
Today, however, we are shifting the focus away from food processes, agro miles and packaging. With a sense of excitement, anticipation and pride, we are changing the narrative to talk about the plate itself. It may be bold to say, but decarbonising the plate has never been more accurate – or more achievable.
We are thrilled to introduce ReCinder – the world’s lowest-carbon tableware. Created through an exclusive collaboration between Rosy Napper and The Home of Sustainable Things, ReCinder is the result of much belief, persistence and grit. Made from ceramic waste, this ultra-local range is both groundbreaking and a major step forward in sustainable design, transforming a problematic waste material into something beautiful and enduring.
Each ReCinder plate diverts approximately 650 grams of ceramic waste from landfill. Sourced from local producers and universities across London, once broken, defective, and unwanted ceramics are transformed into high-quality, durable, and low-impact tableware. ReCinder provides a practical, compelling alternative to the carbon-intensive methods traditionally used in ceramic production.
In other words, the more ReCinder tableware is used, the less ceramic waste ends up in landfill.
The UK ceramics industry generates millions of tonnes of waste each year and while raw clay is recyclable, fired ceramics are not. Their durability and heat resistance make them difficult to process and unsuitable for most waste facilities. As a result, disposal is often expensive and increasingly leads to illegal dumping - another challenge that ReCinder directly addresses.
But ReCinder is more than a solution to ceramic waste. It fosters collaboration, helping others in their own decarbonisation efforts, and highlighting the critical role design plays in reshaping our relationship with materials and waste - it is a milestone in the journey toward a circular economy.
To further reduce its environmental impact, ReCinder uses a custom glaze, also using industrial waste, thus reducing the use of virgin raw material and social and environmental impacts associated with resource extraction. The collection is dishwasher-safe, microwave-safe, and built to last - sustainable not only in how it is made, but in how it is used.
The ReCinder tableware range is available in two sizes: medium plates with a 21cm diameter, and large plates measuring 26cm. The range is available exclusively at The Home of Sustainable Things, with more additions to the collection to be introduced soon.
It’s Craft Week, and London comes alive with a celebration of creativity and talent and The Home of Sustainable Things is no different. We warmly invite you to explore the ReCinder range at our Islington store, presented alongside an unparalleled collection of circular design.
Join us in championing design that delivers genuine positive impact and restores belief in meaningful change. We call upon writers, businesses and the wider public to help us amplify the positive impact of this ground-breaking range. Help us champion design capable of positive impact and restoring belief. It is time to stand behind real, positive solutions. The future is circular – and it begins here.
