Introducing SKINS - a limited edition series of photograms by
Katrina Stamatopoulos.

Born from curiosity and an unfiltered creative impulse, Katrina’s work explores the entanglement of human and nonhuman life through the lenses of consumption, labour and image-making. She examines how cycles of nourishment, decay and reproduction manifest both within the body and through the photographic medium itself.  Filing SKINS

In SKINS, a simple cucumber wrapper becomes a point of departure - transforming into a meditation on protection, perishability, and our uneasy relationship with food today. Transparent plastic sleeves adopt the language of fear and preservation: a shield from contamination, unclean hands, and the inevitable passage of time. Growers and retailers defend shrink-wrapping as essential - a way to preserve moisture and protect a fruit composed of over ninety per cent water yet these thin skins also reveal cultural discomforts around decay, exposure and waste.
When shelf life outweighs flavour and efficiency eclipses nutrition, the contradictions of our food systems are laid bare: abundance beside waste, protection beside suffocation.

SKINS is created using expired photographic paper and incremental shifts in the darkroom enlarger - a slow gradient that mirrors the cucumber’s lifecycle: fresh, ripening, bruising, spoiling. Each photogram is a quiet record of a lifespan, from crisp vitality to inevitable collapse.

The camera-less process places objects directly onto photosensitive paper, fixing every crease and contour at a one-to-one scale. As old as photography itself, the technique holds an immediacy and intimacy - an imprint of something fleeting, held still, yet offering space for the viewer to see the familiar anew.
